Democratic fund-raiser Lynn Forester de Rothschild has spent several months bemoaning Hillary Clinton’s failed bid for the presidential nomination.
Today she went further, throwing her support behind GOP nominee John McCain.
“We must choose the candidate who has a proven record of bipartisanship and reforming government, and that’s John McCain,” Rothschild stated in a press release.
The defection may embarrass Democrats given de Rothschild’s involvement with the Democratic National Committee’s platform committee and the huge efforts by Barack Obama’s campaign to reach out to Clinton supporters - especially women.
But it is hardly surprising, given her previously expressed antipathy to Obama.
“Frankly, I don’t like him,” she said in a CNN interview in July. “I feel like he is an elitist. I feel like he has not given me reason to trust him.”
Her remarks were pounced upon by Obama supporters, who noted that besides being a millionaire in her own right, de Rothschild is the wife of Sir Evelyn Robert Adrian de Rothschild, an extraordinarily wealthy member of the British peerage.
The couple was introduced by Henry Kissinger at a Bilderberg conference, an elite invite-only event held at luxury resorts around the world.
Today, Democratic partisans were even more pointed in their criticisms, suggesting her endorsement was all about protecting her own status as an economic elite.
“If you’re making over $600,000 a year and especially if you’re making over $2.8 million a year, you have an extremely strong incentive to back McCain,” wrote Matthew Yglesias.
A previous Muckety post had noted that de Rothschild has had long been a power player, counting the Clintons and Tony Blair as good friends. Former husband Andrew Stein is former New York City Council president.
She wed de Rothschild, the international banker, in 2000, when she was 46 and he was 69. Forbes called the marriage - her third - “the deal of a lifetime.”
A native of New Jersey, de Rothschild got a job as a young lawyer with media mogul John Kluge. Watching Kluge’s series of successes, she decided to become an entrepreneur herself, building and selling several successful telecommunications companies.
She is now the chief executive of EL Rothschild, the family investment firm, and serves as a director of Estee Lauder and the Economist.

Whew! When I first saw this article, I thought she was endorsing Obama. That worried me. I support Obama, and this woman’s endorsement is not a plus for either candidate. I’m glad Palin/McCain is stuck with it.

So??? If Ms. L.F. de ROTHSCHILD ‘endorses’ JOHN’the-old-fool’McCAIN - does this mean there’s a break on a bottle of ‘CHATEAU LAFITTE’ for me - what’s in it for me??? So a woman with ‘a famous family monniker’ was for HILLARY with her collection of horrendous “…asbestos pants-suits” hiding her ‘UGLINESS/CORRUPTUION/TREACHERY’ - now she is for JOHN’the-old-fool’McCAIN + his female VEEP SARAH PALIN - what does that do for me??? Does her ‘vote’ count any more than mine??? BESIDES - IT IS THE BRITISH PORTION OF ‘ZUM ROTTENSCHILDE’ FAMILY - THEY DON’T MAKE ANY WINE OR HAND OUT ANY SAMPLES!!! Not exactly proclaiming ‘habemus papam - we have a new pope. Just a JOISEY ‘gurl’ gettin’ her name/face in the paper!!!

This women is “out of touch” She apparantly does not look at the issues and what Obama really stands for. It is incrediable to me that she would swing to McCain, who is certainly not destitute and is much more an elitist, than Obama….
Unbelievable…

Perhaps that was the problem with Hillary’s campaign - her staffers were more interested in seeing “Hillary the woman” succeed rather than in “Hillary the Presidential Candidate” succeed. Despite the differences between Obama and Clinton, it was clear that they were dwarfed by the differences between Clinton and McCain-Palin.
When it comes to the issues, John McCain and Hillary Clinton are polar opposites, pretty much across the board.
It’s is absurd to think that Obama is an elitist. John McCain doesn’t know how many houses he owns, and his wife wears $300,000 earrings. Let’s be real people.

So glad to read these comments. I thought I was the only one to see the irony of the “Hampton Summer Crowd” calling someone elitist. At first, I thought that this was an SNL skit mistakenly gone serious.

Obama an elitist?
How about Mcsame who does remember how many homes he has and cindy his wife wears $300,000 on her person at a time?
Is Mcsame/Palin Or should it be Palin/Mcsame team can solve the middle class troubles, problems?
#7. diamond 09.17.2008
Lynn Forester is endorsing Mcsame/Palin because they will not raise taxes for the filthy rich and Obama will raise taxes for those making more than $250,000 per anum. But Obama will cut taxes for the middle class people and for all those Wall Mart moms unless they are also making more than $250,000 per year.
Come on my friends,We wemen are not that stupid!!!!!!!!!!
