It’s not always that candidates for president or vice president have children who are serving in the military during wartime.
But the 2008 election will be decidedly different. Only Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee who has two young daughters, will not have a child who has been or will be assigned to serve in Iraq.
Beau Biden, the eldest son of Obama’s running mate, Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., is a member of the Delaware National Guard. He’s scheduled to go Iraq in October for a year as a military lawyer.
“Because of other duties it won’t be possible for me to be here this fall,” Beau Biden, Delaware’s attorney general, said in introducing his father at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.
U.S. Marine Jimmy McCain, the son of Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee for president, returned in February from a tour of duty in Iraq.
In the future, his brother, John S. McCain IV, who is known as Jack, might go there as well. Jack McCain is expected to graduate from the United States Naval Academy next year.
Army Pfc. Track Palin, the son of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain’s newly announced running mate, goes to Iraq on Sept. 11.
Beau Biden, whose full name is Joseph R. Biden III, has been seen as a possible successor to his father in the Senate, should Joe Biden be elected vice president.
However, his time in Iraq might complicate matters. According to The Washington Post, if Joe Biden becomes vice president, Delaware’s governor would then appoint a replacement for him to serve two years.
A special election would take place in 2010 for the remaining four years of the term. Given his duties in Iraq, Beau Biden might not be available to serve the first two years.

“Sarah Barracuda,” who believes a victim of rape or incest should be forbidden an abortion, has now been delivered of a Downs Syndrome child and cited “September 11th” twice in speaking of her unenlightened eldest’s lack of awareness in joining the Army to continue this abomination on behalf of Bush/Cheney’s fascist faction. Perhaps he’s merely a psychopath with a desire to kill more innocents…or perhaps he didn’t enlist in the Army, as Palin stated, but is ensconced in an Alaska Army National Guard unit where his mother the governor will ensure he be shielded from any risk of harm.
She clearly is the “man” of the Palin family and a bit of a psychopath herself.
Married-to-the-Mob McCain is in “good company.” Wonder how many who survived his failed attempt to sink the Forrestal will be casting votes on his behalf?
