Rachel Maddow gets MSNBC time-slot

It happened more quickly than we anticipated: Political analyst Rachel Maddow has gotten her own show, replacing Dan Abrams in the MSNBC lineup.

As Muckety recently reported, Maddow has a huge following among the network’s younger, liberal-leaning viewers. Many tout her smarts and self-confidence, and like that her approach is wry rather than haranguing - a welcome change from what passes as political conversation on most cable networks, including MSNBC.

Maddow’s show is slated to begin Sept. 8. Abrams, who was previously general manager for the all-news cable station, hosts his last program at 9 p.m. Thursday. He is expected to remain at the network, where he is chief legal correspondent.

A longtime host on the liberal talk-radio network Air America, Maddow has been a beneficiary of the long presidential primary season.

Originally a guest analyst on CNN, as well as MSNBC, she quickly moved up the ladder to become MSNBC’s exclusive commentator. The buzz about her as a media star in search of her own time slot grew louder last month after she filled in for eight nights as the substitute host on
Countdown with Keith Olbermann, while Olbermann was vacationing.

At the time, MSNBC President Phil Griffen had said: “She’s on the short list. It’s a very short list.”

It says something about the power politics of MSNBC that the news was actually leaked on Daily Kos several hours before the official announcement by none other than Olbermann.
