The latest suggestion from the religious right on how to stop Democrat Barack Obama’s bid to be president? Rain him out.
Stuart Shepard, digital media director of Focus on the Family Action - the political arm of James Dobson’s powerful Focus on the Family - created a video encouraging Americans to pray that it rains on Obama. Specifically, he called for rain on Aug. 28 in Denver, when Obama is slated to accept the Democratic nomination at an outdoor stadium.
Focus on Family Action describes itself on its website as “a platform for informing, inspiring and rallying those who care deeply about the family to greater involvement in the moral, cultural and political issues that threaten our nation.”
In the video, Shepard explains his anti-Obama point of view: “I’m still pro-life, and I’m still in favor of marriage as being between one man and one woman. And I would like the next president, who will select justices for the next Supreme Court, to agree.”
Officials at Focus on the Family Action pulled the video off citizenlink.org, its website, after many complained about calling for prayer to inflict harm on another person.
Shepard and Focus on the Family Action senior VP Tom Minnery explained that the video was meant to be humorous. “We are not about confusing people about prayer,” Minnery said.
Keith Olbermann criticized the video on his Aug. 11 show and named Shepard as his “worst person in the world.” Olbermann railed: “There are droughts … and this idiot, who firmly believes he can induce rain by prayer, is wasting it by asking his lord and savior to play a political prank.”
