Gwyneth Paltrow appeals to Americans abroad to vote

London-based actress Gwyneth Paltrow stars in a new video aimed at persuading Americans living abroad to vote in this fall’s presidential election.

The video, “Where In The World Will YOU Vote?” kicks off a series of ads and events by Democrats Abroad, the overseas branch of the U.S. Democratic Party, pitched at the 7 million American residents who live outside the U.S.

In addition to Paltrow, the ad draws upon a kaleidoscope of faces and voices from mostly younger Americans with a high hip quotient. But even as it urges them to vote, it never utters the name of Illinois Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

In a press release posted on its website yesterday, Democrats Abroad said that it plans a series of voter registration parties in cities around the world, as well as online appeals on social networks such as Facebook. It also maintains a website to help voters navigate registration for absentee ballots.

“This is a critical election, and we urge all Americans living abroad to request ballots now,” said Chairwoman Christine Schon Marques. “We hope that this video along with our other efforts will help Americans, including over 200,000 American students studying abroad, vote for change this fall.”

Paltrow, an Academy-Award-winning actress and Los Angeles native who starred in “Shakespeare in Love,” lives in London with her husband, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, and their two children. Earlier this year, she co-hosted a small fundraiser for Obama at the London home of Elisabeth Murdoch, the daughter of media mogul K. Rupert Murdoch.

The video was directed by Jaci Judelson, a New Yorker now living in Paris, whose credits include international television campaigns for The Gap, Volvic, Ralph Lauren and Nokia.

The countries with the most Americans are Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Germany, according to Democrats Abroad.
