The luxe 740 Park, described in Michael Gross’s book of the same name as “the world’s richest apartment building,” has a new opening.
Investment banker Peter Huang has listed apartment 4-5D for $38 million.
Although the current decor doesn’t do a thing for us, a buyer is sure to be found for one of the most coveted addresses in New York. The 11-room, 7,500-square-foot pad has 5 bedrooms, a fireplace and 2 maid’s rooms. With 15 percent down, the monthly mortgage payment would be a measly $204,158, plus monthly maintenance of $10,574.
However, merely having the cash is no guarantee of getting in.
The 740 Park boards scrutinizes all potential buyers to make sure they fit in with the quiet-money tenor of the place. Barbra Streisand and Barbara Walters were rejected as too flashy. (Celebs are better advised to look across town, to 15 Central Park West, which counts Sting among its owners.)
Nevertheless, 740 has had its share of the storied rich, including John D. Rockefeller Jr., Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and her sister Lee Bouvier Radziwill (as children) and author Jerzy Kosinski.
Current residents include Merrill Lynch chairman John Thain, billionaire David Koch and designer Vera Wang.
