The actress dated Follieri for four years, and broke up with him just last week, walking the red carpet for her latest blockbuster, Get Smart, alone.

The Associated Press reports that Follieri claimed to be the chief financial officer for the Vatican, so that he could obtain Catholic Church properties at a discounted rate.

Follieri, the co-founder, CEO and chairman of the Follieri Group, is being charged with six counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail. He also faces one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, for which he could be imprisoned up to five years.

This isn’t the first time Follieri has had legal trouble.

Follieri was arrested in April for writing a bad check for $215,000 to a public relations firm. After he reimbursed the firm, the charges were dropped.

Earlier in June, the New York State attorney general’s office announced it was investigating the Follieri Foundation for neglecting to file tax disclosure forms.

In May 2007, Follieri was sued by one of his investors, Ronald Burkle, head of the Yucaipa Companies, which funds Follieri Group. Former President Bill Clinton is an adviser to the Yucaipa Companies.

The civil suit, filed in Delaware Chancery Court, accused Follieri of misappropriating his investors’ funds to sustain his lavish lifestyle, and loaning the funds to his family’s nonprofit Follieri Foundation, of which Hathaway was once a board member.

The suit did not mention Hathaway by name, but states that Follieri spent some of his investors’ money to fund a vacation with his “then girlfriend,” in 2005. Hathaway was dating Follieri at that time.

Follieri appeared yesterday in Manhattan court, where his bail was set at $21 million.

Did she dump him??? Just five days before he was arrested they went out to dinner and the photo suggests nothing had changed. Did she move out of Follieri’s appartment, or is he now under HOUSE ARREST with Anne still living there, (nice work if you can get it) Anne is completely infatuated, and had he not been arrested would no doubt, still continued to see him, she did after all say she was dreaming of marrying this loser. Anne should ask herself if he would have given her a second glance, had it not been for her Celeb status The sooner this Guy is behind BARS it better for Anne, then she hopefully will meet someone who will love her for who she is and not for what she has achieved. It is an unfortunate fact of life, once a girl falls for the wrong TYPE, she tends to go for the same time and time again. Be very careful next time ANNE.
