Is Charlie Black merely stating the obvious, or is he showing his roots?
Black, chief political adviser to the McCain presidential campaign, is on the hot seat today for some frank comments to Fortune magazine.

Describing the December assassination of Benazir Bhutto as an “unfortunate event,” Black said McCain benefited from the event because “his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who’s ready to be Commander-in-Chief.” Similarly, he said, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil “certainly … would be a big advantage to him.”
As a longtime Washington lobbyist, Black is an expert at assessing situations and finding ways to gain the advantage.
He’s the former chairman of BKSH & Associates, a lobby firm whose clients include defense contractors Lockheed Martin and United Technologies. Blackwater Worldwide, the private security firm investigated for its role in civilian deaths in Iraq, is a former client.
Althhough several other campaign aides, including national finance co-chairman Tom Loeffler, have quit the McCain campaign because of their lobbying ties, Black has stayed put after retiring from the BKSH job in March.
He apologized yesterday for his comments to Fortune.
McCain told reporters, “I cannot imagine why he would say it. It’s not true. I’ve worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another attack on the United States of America.”
