Speaking at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Jobs said the second-generation devices go on sale July 11 and incorporate the first upgrades since the phone hit shelves in June 2007.
The new models have 3G wireless capabilities, making it faster to browse the web. They feature global positioning systems, or GPS. Finally, the iPhone 3G will add an App Store, where customers can directly download new (and sometimes free) applications directly to their phones.
Despite speculation that Apple would allow the iPhone to use other wireless providers, Jobs did not mention any additional options for iPhone users other than AT&T.
The iPhone has been the “it” gadget since its launch and its popularity doesn’t seem likely to wane any time soon, especially with the drop in price.
The original 8-gigabyte iPhone had a list price of $599. The second generation iPhone will retail at just $199 for the 8GB phone and $299 for the 16GB model.
The Associated Press, Major League Baseball, and eBay were among the companies that debuted new iPhone applications during the speech.
Long-time Apple user and Apple Inc. director Al Gore was reportedly in attendance at Jobs’ talk, as was iPhone owner and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Receiving buzz outside the tech-world, the iPhone already made a cameo in one of the summer’s hottest movies: Sex and the City. Although the technically-challenged protagonist Carrie finds Samantha’s iPhone too hard to operate, there is no mistaking the iconic device as the newest Apple product-placement in the Sex and the City franchise.
The Apple icon has long been a familiar symbol for fans of the TV show; Carrie has always been a iBook user.
