On Monday, The New York Times reported declines in Oprah’s viewership and magazine sales. Winfrey’s reality program, Oprah’s Big Give, lost a third of its audience this year.
Both the magazine and TV industries have suffered in the last year, so Winfrey isn’t the only mogul whose numbers have decreased. However, earlier this month, Winfrey was also overlooked by the Daytime Emmy Awards.
The Oprah Winfrey Show is up for only three Daytime Emmys, all for technical merit, including lighting direction, tape sound mixing and technical direction.
The outstanding talk show category was broken up into two genres for the first time: entertainment and informative, giving six shows the chance to compete for the two awards. The Oprah Winfrey Show is not being considered in either category.
Dr. Phil, who was introduced to TV audiences on The Oprah Winfrey Show, picked up a nomination for outstanding talk show (informative), facing off against The Tyra Banks Show and PBS’s A Place of Our Own.
Oprah’s biggest competition, Ellen DeGeneres, picked up eight nominations including outstanding talk show host and outstanding talk show in the entertainment sector.
Although DeGeneres has fewer viewers than Winfrey, she has gained audience in some markets where Winfrey’s numbers have declined. DeGeneres has been awarded the Daytime Emmy for outstanding talk show and outstanding talk show host for the past four years.
While the Times speculates that Winfrey could have alienated some of her viewers by endorsing Obama, she has avoided focusing on her political involvement on the program.
The Daytime Emmys will be broadcast on June 20 on ABC and will be hosted by Cameron Mathison and The View’s Sherri Shepherd.
