Though it’s still in pre-production, the movie Nine is already generating buzz. The cast has yet to be confirmed, but rumored co-stars are all familiar with the Academy Awards.
Variety reports that Daniel Day-Lewis intends to take the leading role of Italian film director Guido Contini. Joining the best actor of 2007 will be Marion Cotillard, last year’s Oscar-winning best actress.
Another 2007 Oscar nominee for best actress, Penelope Cruz, has also signed on. Rounding out the cast are past Oscar winners Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren.
Rob Marshall, who directed 2002’s six-time Oscar winning film Chicago, will direct.
Day-Lewis takes the place of 2007 best-supporting actor, Javier Bardem, who dropped out of the film’s production due to exhaustion.
The movie is based on the semi-autobiographical 1963 film 8 1/2, written and directed by Federico Fellini. Before becoming a movie, Nine was a Broadway show in 1982, and returned to the stage in 2003, with Antonio Banderas starring and featuring Mary Stuart Masterson and Jane Krakowski.
Harvey Weinstein is producing the film, even though he reportedly butted heads with Day-Lewis about the distribution of My Left Foot, the actor’s first Oscar-winning picture.
Landing both Day-Lewis and Loren is an acheivement in itself. Day-Lewis is known for being selective in choosing his film roles. He has made only five movies since 1996.
Sophia Loren hasn’t starred in a picture since 2004, and like Day-Lewis, has only appeared in a handful of films in the last decade.
