How is the aviation pioneer, accused of being a Nazi sympathizer, connected to the Jewish newspaper mogul?

After Lindbergh’s 1927 trans-Atlantic flight, philanthropist Daniel Guggenheim and his son, Harry, sponsored the flying ace’s cross-America tour through their Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. Harry Guggenheim, himself a pilot, struck up a friendship with Lindbergh, whom he invited several times to the millionaire’s Sands Point mansion, Falaise.

Harry Guggenheim later co-founded Newsday, a daily newspaper in Long Island, with his third wife, Alicia Patterson, a scion of the Patterson-McCormick publishing dynasty. Guggenheim was president of the company, while his wife was editor and publisher until her death in 1963; afterward, he assumed those duties until 1967.

Now, real-estate mogul and New York Daily News owner Zuckerman, an active supporter of Israeli and international Jewish causes, is in a bidding war with Australian news baron Rupert Murdoch to purchase the paper from flamboyant billionaire Sam Zell, the chairman of the Tribune Corporation.
