In a twist on art imitating life, real-life Manhattan socialite Lydia Hearst-Shaw is joining the cast of Gossip Girl.

Lydia Hearst-Shaw is the great-granddaughter of publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst and the daughter of Patty Hearst, who achieved notoriety after she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974.

Gossip Girl is the fictional account of the drama surrounding an Upper East Side high school, in which its leading ladies wear Valentino dresses and hit actual New York hot spots, such as Butter.

Lydia Hearst-Shaw should be able to draw from her life’s experiences to fill her role on the CW show.

The 23 year-old socialite is a fixture on red carpets and A-list benefits and her photo frequents the pages of blogs like Park Avenue Peerage and New York Social Diary.

She has modeled for Louis Vuitton, Heatherette and Escada. Her first feature film, Frost, will be released this spring.

Photos from the set of Gossip Girl show that Hearst-Shaw’s character, Amelia, will be acting opposite Ed Westwood, who plays the show’s bad boy, Chuck Bass.

Hearst-Shaw will make her Gossip Girl debut on May 19.
