Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey governor and EPA administrator, continues her dual pursuits of business and politics.
Whitman headed the EPA under George Bush, from 2001 to 2003. She then founded Whitman Strategy Group, which advises companies on environmental issues. Clients have included FMC Corporation and Keyspan.
According to recent SEC filings, she holds more than $800,000 in stock in two public companies where she serves as a director - nearly $750,000 in United Technologies and $64,000 in Texas Instruments.
The Whitman family derives significant income from the business activities of her husband, John R. Whitman, a managing partner at Sycamore Ventures. John Whitman was CEO of Prudential-Bache Interfunding and has advised corporations such as Ford Motor and Coopers & Lybrand.
Christine Todd Whitman has been outspoken about what she perceives as a need to move the Republican Party to a more moderate position. She wrote a best-seller titled, It’s My Party Too in 2005 and founded a PAC with the same name.
The PAC later merged with the Republican Leadership Council, which Whitman co-founded with former Sen. John Danforth and Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. The group has not been a major force in funding GOP campaigns, having raised just $500,000 in the 2007-2008 election cycle.
Whitman has been a regular giver to Republicans for Choice and to WISH List, an organization that supports female Republican candidates. Now she has a cause closer to home: Her daughter, Kate Whitman, is running for Congress.
Kate Whitman has political DNA from both branches of the Todd Whitman clan. Her great-grandfather, Charles S. Whitman Sr., was governor of New York from 1914 to 1916.
