Conflict dead ahead for AMR’s Ibarguen?

Alberto Ibarguen, CEO of the Knight Foundation and former publisher of the Miami Herald, joined the board of directors of AMR and American Airlines in January. There wasn’t much of a honeymoon.

This week the airline canceled thousands of flights, angering customers and leading to millions of dollars in lost revenue.

Going forward, AMR faces tough questions about maintenance procedures and FAA oversight, while skyrocketing fuel prices threaten short-term profitability and long-term viability.

Dallas businessman Roger Staubauch, one of Ibarguen’s fellow AMR directors, knew what to do in these tough situations in an earlier career: scramble. He quarterbacked the Dallas Cowboys to the Super Bowl.

Ibarguen comes from a different discipline: journalism. He is chairman of the Newseum, which celebrates the free press, and a director of ProPublica, the new non-profit news operation dedicated to investigative projects.

That could present a dilemma to Ibarguen as he sits in the middle of one of the biggest news stories going. What will he tell the reporters if they call?
