At the turn of the century, Sigmund Freud invited his contemporary and famed psychologist Alfred Adler to an informal, Wednesday-night discussion group at his home, which was the beginning of the psychoanalytic movement.

Adler, who later parted company with him over theoretical differences, is the grandfather of public radio personality Margot Adler. The younger Adler worked at radio station WBAI with Lisa Ryan, daughter of politically liberal actor Robert Ryan.

The elder Ryan lived at the Dakota on Manhattan’s upper west side, and shortly before his death, leased his 11-room apartment to John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The Ryan estate ultimately sold the apartment to Lennon, who was shot and killed outside the building in 1980.
