By the time Donald Rumsfeld stepped down as defense secretary in 2006, even members of his own party thought he had overstayed his welcome after nearly six years heading the Defense Department and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

That list included Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, Susan Collins of Maine and Norm Coleman of Minnesota.

Yet the rift between Rumsfeld and the upper echelons of the GOP hasn’t stopped the the former defense chief from opening his wallet to GOP candidates and causes.

According to Federal Election Commission Records, Rumsfeld and his wife Joyce have written checks totaling $51,200 to political campaigns since the former defense chief was edged out by President Bush on Dec. 18, 2006.

Each has given $10,000 To the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee. Donald Rumsfeld has also supported Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-California, the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee; and Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nevada.

Joyce Rumsfeld contributed to the presidential campaign of Mitt Romney and the re-election campaigns of Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen. Pete Domenici, R-New Mexico, where the Rumsfelds have a home and ranch.
