When former presidential hopeful Fred Thompson decided to return to the entertainment biz, he turned to the William Morris Agency.

The agency announced yesterday that Thompson had signed with them, suggesting that he wants to return to his career in TV and movies now that his run for the Republican presidential nomination has ended.

As an actor, Thompson is most famous for his role as attorney Arthur Branch on Law & Order. He has also appeared in the films The Hunt for Red October, Curly Sue, In the Line of Fire and Die Hard 2.

While the former Tennessee senator won’t be making it to the oval office in 2008, he did play President Ulysses S. Grant in last year’s TV mini series Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

The William Morris Agency is a powerhouse of talent representation. The company can boast representing some of Hollywood’s legends, including Mae West, Charlie Chaplin, Frank Capra, Clark Gable and Judy Garland.

Clients over the years have also included Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Dick Van Dyke, Bill Cosby, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys.

As a current client of WMA, Thompson joins Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Herbie Hancock, Billy Crystal, Joy Behar, Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, among many others.

William Morris Agency is run by CEO James A. Wiatt and president Dave Wirtschafter, who have previously worked for International Creative Management, Inc.

Thompson dropped out of the presidential race in January, and has endorsed John McCain.
