There’s more trouble for former New York governor Eliot Spitzer. The New York Times reports that Spitzer was “deeply involved” in the effort to discredit State Senate majority leader Joseph Bruno last year. Previously, Spitzer had said he was not personally involved.
Spitzer resigned as governor earlier this month after being linked to a high-dollar prostitution ring.
The Times reports that Albany County district attorney P. David Soares has developed new evidence that Spitzer held detailed discussions with aides about the Bruno effort and ordered damaging information released.
Last July, state attorney general Andrew Cuomo said Spitzer’s administration had improperly used state police to gather records on Bruno. Spitzer was not personally implicated. In Albany, the scandal is known as Troopergate.
