In the biggest organized crime crackdown in years, dozens of reputed gangsters, including the leaders of the Gambino syndicate, were arrested this morning.
The law enforcement operation, code-named “Old Bridge,” focused on New York and Palermo, Sicily. Authorities in Italy also made arrests today.
Sixty-two people, including the top tiers of the Gambino family, have been named in an indictment unsealed today. The charges include murder, racketeering, gambling and extortion. Three of the seven murders outlined in the indictments date back more than two decades.
The top men in the Gambino family - acting boss John D’Amico, underboss Domenico Cefalu and consigliere Joseph Corozzo, have been accused of extortion and racketeering. Richard G. Gotti, nephew of the late mob boss John Gotti, was also charged.
Gambino soldier Charles Carneglia was charged with five murders over three decades, including that of Albert Gelb, a court officer who was killed in 1976.
Gambino family captain Nicholas Corozzo was charged with the 1996 double murder of Robert Arena, a Luchese family associate, and Arena’s friend, Thomas Maranga.
Many of the charges relate to extortion at construction projects in the New York metro area, including a NASCAR construction site on Staten Island and the Liberty View Harbor construction site in Jersey City, among others.
Prosecutors described these incidents as “part of a longstanding effort by the Gambino family to control and coordinate the extortion of dozens of private construction companies.” The family extorted money from business owners and also stole from unions such as Teamsters Local 282, according to the indictment.
