Power lines buzzing at Davos

By Laurie Bennett

When we grow up, we want to go to Davos.

All those billionaires and potentates murmuring over cocktails, making deals in their hotel rooms, jitterbugging at the Google gala. The World Economic Forum is the ultimate Muckety meeting.

You’d think our name alone would earn us an invite. But we’re still young and underfunded and we don’t have the wardrobe. Next year, watch out!

The 2008 get-together, which began yesterday, could be a depressing scene, anyway. Hand-wringing over the markets. Bill Gates lecturing about the new capitalism. George Soros warning of “systematic failure.” No Angelina, no Brad.

Yet the rich and powerful can’t stay away. The map above shows just a few of the world leaders and captains of commerce scheduled to attend this year.

Although nonprofits and media get in for free, corporate leaders can spend as much as $230,000 to attend the forum and participate in private sessions, Andrew Ross Sorkin writes in the New York Times Davos blog.

Reuters, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal are also there, posting updates throughout the day.

The Financial Times even organized a pre-summit panel discussion among its editors, to delineate the big issues. We promise not to be so full of ourselves when we crack adulthood.
