At Oral Roberts University last week, two more regents resigned, a whistle-blowing professor was reinstated and a judge issued a rare gag order in a civil lawsuit.
That was just preamble for this week and what could be one of the most important regents meetings in the Tulsa school’s history.
Beginning tomorrow, regents will evaluate “strategic opportunities,” the university says in a release. Former president Richard Roberts, son of the university’s namesake, resigned last year following allegations of mismanagement.
In an interview with The Oklahoman, board chair George Pearsons said ORU is at a “crossroads” and is entering a “new era.” He said the regents will discuss the school’s more than $50 million debt load and the proposed gift of businessman Mart Green, whose family founded Hobby Lobby.
The Green family has given ORU $8 million and has promised $62 million more if significant changes are made.
Regents I.V. Hilliard and Benny Hinn resigned last week. Hilliard was a business regent, and Hinn was a regent emeritus. Hinn, a business regent until recently, is one of six televangelists being investigated by U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley.
Last month, regents Creflo Dollar and Jesse Duplantis resigned. Grassley is also investigating Dollar’s ministry.
John Swails, one of three ORU professors who sued the school claiming wrongful termination, settled his portion of the case and will begin teaching again.
The lawsuit continues for the other professors, but no one involved can talk about the case outside the courtroom, Tulsa County District Judge Rebecca Brett Nightingale ruled Friday.

This is a sad situation.
The folks at ORU need to love and care for one another.
Yes the may ” speak with the tonguse of men and of angels…..but have NOT LOVE they are as a sounindg gong or a tinkling cymbal.
They said of the early church ( which was much simpler and less complicated than todays set up!!!!!) ” SEE HOW THEY LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
PLEASE pass this on to Benny Hinn, Creflo Dollar, and each one who is involved in this saga, and may it bring them to seek forgiveness and love for one another. THE WORLD IS WATCHING WHAT DO THEY SEE ??????????
Please get off your pedestals and be humbled so that GOD will exalt you, not power, possessions and positions. WAKE UP O.R.U. before its too late PLEASE
