A star-studded presidential campaign

Celebrity support, always important in national campaigns, is likely to play an increasing role in the high-cost, heated presidential campaign of 2008.

When it comes to good-looking supporters, Barack Obama leads the pack, with Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, and George Clooney. And of course, there’s his powerhouse stumper, Oprah Winfrey.

Hillary Clinton is backed by a slightly older, more established, show business crowd which includes Chevy Chase, Danny DeVito, Rob Reiner and Steven Spielberg.

John Edwards, meanwhile, has garnered support from Hollywood power couple Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Dennis Kucinich can count on Lord of the Rings alum, Viggo Mortensen, Willie Nelson and Melissa Etheridge.

Chuck Norris, Walker, Texas Ranger, hearts Mike Huckabee. Kelsey Grammer’s vote will go to Rudy Giuliani.

The other Republican candidates don’t have quite the same A-list celebrity support. New England Patriots owner Robert K. Kraft and Danny Ainge of the Boston Celtics will support Mitt Romney. Although members of the Osmond family have spoken favorably about Romney, only Alan Osmond has given to his campaign. Actors Rip Torn and Dick Van Patten are backing John McCain.

There is a political divide in one show biz clan. The Baldwin brothers have very opposite political views. Alec Baldwin is lending his support to Hillary Clinton (unlike his conservative TV personality, 30 Rock’s Jack Donaghy). His brother, Stephen Baldwin, recently called in to the Howard Stern show to say that he’ll vote for Huckabee, because he is against gay marriage.
