Don’t mess with business. That’s the message of U.S. Chamber of Commerce president Thomas Donohue.
“I’m concerned about anti-corporate and populist rhetoric from candidates for the presidency, members of Congress and the media,” Donohue told the Los Angeles Times. “It suggests to us that we have to demonstrate who it is in this society that creates jobs, wealth and benefits — and who it is that eats them.”
He said his group plans to build a “business organization so strong that when it bites you in the butt, you bleed,” spending more than the approximately $60 million it spent in the last presidential cycle.
Democrats John Edwards, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as Republican Mike Huckabee, have advanced populist themes.
Donohue toned down his rhetoric in a speech Tuesday, explaining the Chamber’s 2008 goals. A Chamber report said it would “pour unprecedented resources” into getting out the vote for pro-growth candidates. The Chamber does not endorse in the presidential race.
