People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, usually protests high-profile companies such as KFC, Denny’s and PetSmart.
However, the organization’s latest campaign is more personal. The newest target? Fashion moguls and actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, or should we say Hairy-Kate and Trashley Trollsen, as they are now know on www.peta2.com, the teen-friendly PETA website.
PETA disagrees with the twin’s fur-inclusive personal style and the fur products sold as a part of the launch of their new fashion line, The Row.
Visitors to the peta2 website are encouraged to play the interactive web game “Dress up the Trollsens,” where they can accessorize cartoon characters Hairy-Kate and Trashley with articles of clothing that are dripping with blood, including the “bludgeoned bunny beret,” “squashed squirrel skirt,” “not-so-foxy fox fur coat” and “dead doggie shoulder bag.” The results can be emailed to a friend or posted on other websites.
Merchandise featuring Hairy-Kate and Trashley is available online, in T-shirts, tank tops, and sweatshirts. Free banner downloads featuring the twins are also available.
PETA has also created a Myspace page for the Trollsen Twins, so supporters of the anti-Olsen campaign can demonstrate their support. The “About me” section of the Myspace page reads: “Hi, we’re Hairy Kate and Trashley Trollsen, and like most trolls, we live under a bridge and wait for furry animals to walk by so we can skin them and wear them as hats. Because we’re celebrities, we don’t have to live by the same rules that ugly people like you do, and if we want to wrap ourselves up in someone else’s skin, or drape our bodies in the rotting remains of someone’s family, we totally can! And boy, do we ever.”
Young anti-fur activists have the option to contact Hairy-Kate and Trashley by signing a pre-written petition to the twins that encourages them to stop wearing and selling fur.
PETA protesters also went to the Olsens’ star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They carried photos of the twins labeled with the slogan: “Fur is worn by beautiful animals and ugly people.”
There has been no official response yet from the Olsens.
PETA does recognize fur-friendly celebrities. Major stars such as Eva Mendes, Charlize Theron, Christy Turlington and Martha Stewart have supported PETA’s “Fur is dead” campaign.
Some celebrities, including Mendes, have posed naked for PETA, promoting the slogan: “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.”
