He claims he IS America in the title of his best-seller, I Am America (And So Can You!). So why is it so surprising that Stephen Colbert has announced he’s running for president?

For starters, Colbert is running only in South Carolina. And he’s a comedian.

The former correspondent on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show and current host of Colbert Report can’t be taken seriously. However, since he announced his candidacy last week, his popularity is soaring.

Editor & Publisher reports that Colbert, “gains 13% of voters in a matchup with Rudy Giuliani and Sen. Hillary Clinton.” Additionally, much of the online community is certainly backing Colbert. The Facebook group Steven Colbert For President-1,000,000 Strong has achieved its membership goal much more quickly than any other president hopeful.

To weigh in on who you think Colbert’s running mate should be, check out the poll on Colbert’s fan site. The choices: Jon Stewart, Vladimir Putin, Mike Huckabee, and you guessed it - Stephen Colbert.
