Oprah Winfrey just got a little richer.

NBC Universal announced today that it would buy Oxygen Media, the cable TV network founded by Winfrey, CEO Geraldine Laybourne and three TV producers, for $925 million.

The purchase is yet another indication from NBC Universal that it is targeting women viewers. Other Universal properties with significant female audiences include iVillage, Bravo and the Today show.

NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker said the acquisition “increases our foothold in the advertiser-coveted young, upscale, female demographic, and perfectly complements our current roster of cable channels and plays to our strength of running and operating cable networks.”

Since its launch in 2000, Oxygen has built an audience of 74 million subscribers. The Financial Times reported today that Winfrey is not expected to play a role at the network after completion of the sale.
