Delta Air Lines, emerging from bankruptcy, has named a former head of Northwest Airlines as its new chief executive, sparking speculation that the two companies might merge.
Richard H. Anderson will become CEO on Sept. 1, replacing Gerald Grinstein. Anderson headed Northwest from 2001 to 2004, when he left to become executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group Inc.
Anderson denied any immediate merger strategy. “Between Northwest and Delta there are no plans,” he told the Wall Street Journal. “Over time there will be consolidation, and the key for Delta is to remain strong so that it is always in control of its destiny.”
